Today did not go according to plan, but it did go well. The students did well on their science projects. They also did well singing at the funeral and the the hospital. Practice in church also went well. Everything went so well that we have no homework! Enjoy! Go play in the snow after church.

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

Hey! Did you miss me? Sorry about yesterday, I ended up having several impromptu meetings after school and forgot to blog.

Tomorrow we are singing in the funeral and caroling. I'd love it if the students dressed up more so than T-shirts. Thanks! Also because of the tight schedule, I am asking the students to bring a cold lunch tomorrow.

I also could use some volunteers to bring some treats on Friday.

We did not have any new assignments today.

Friday, December 14, 2012

Happy Friday! We rocked our memory work today. The class average a 97%! How awesome is that? We also talked about persuasive writing so I apologize if you end up with a paragraph saying why you should get your child ___________. We also continued to work on our science and geo projects. For math we did some story problem work and in Lit we are gearing up to learn how Billy and his dogs do in the big hunt.

The radio station Sunny 97.7 has their Christmas Idol running on the station. Our fourth grade class submitted a song.  According to the info I was given, the fourth grade will be on the air today (11th) at 5:10-5:20.

Voting is done online by going to their website.  www.sunny977.com
Then click on Radio Plus Info
Wait for the picture that describes the Christmas Idol and click where it says click here

There is a place to submit your vote along with your e-mail.
Only one vote is allowed for each e-mail address.

The original info had said that the entries would be online for people to listen to, I couldn't find that-it may still be coming.

Hope you enjoy their song.

If we win, we get money, so vote please!
Hey everyone. It is a nasty cold and flu season out there, and now whooping cough! Stay healthy my friends! Today we went through our math test from Friday. A few folks did very well, but since we average a C we are going to give it another try. The biggest issues in math seem to be paying attention to what we are doing and not making computation errors. (When the problems get longer we seem to forget how to add and subtract etc.) We also picked our second countries to do prezzis on. We did a sort of lottery system. We also learned about a bunch of different types of formations left behind by volcanoes and almost volcanoes. Not as exciting as watching volcanoes explode, but we survived. I forgot to mention that we went through food labels in health yesterday and talked about some of the trade offs we sometimes need to make.

Happy Advent! Jesus is Coming! Today we had a REALLY long Russia video that was crammed with way more stuff than we had time for, so we picked out some segments to watch. We corrected the science tests as well. We had 8 A's and averaged a B overall. Not bad! We took our math test today. It was set for tomorrow, but this gives us less homework on a church night. We also had some time to work on our geo study guide that is due tomorrow.

Another week is slipping by! I had a tech conference this am which was worth my time. Mrs. Boggs had a great time filling in for me. They discussed Russia some more and also took the science test. They also discussed fact vs opinion and how to tell the difference. In math we looked at adding and subtracting mix measures. In other words, how do you add 3 hours 48 min 23 seconds and 2 hours 55 min and 46 seconds.

Happy Friday to you, Happy Friday to you! Today we looked a very little bit at the culture of Russia. There are some interesting parallels to the United States' development. We also looked at the voicethread web site and I had a little too much fun with the microphone. (Sorry 6th grade!) We also talked about the magnitude of earthquakes. Did you know a level 3 is 32 times stronger than a level 2? So if there is a level 9 earthquake it is 32 x 32 x 32 x 32 x 32 x 32 x 32 x 32 greater in power than a level 1. Yikes!

We didn't have much discussion on rates and unit price though. The next time you are shopping with your student, see if he or she can find the unit price marked on the shelf. Feel free to ask your student about bug cuisine.

It's Wednesday! Hurrah! Why cheer for Wednesday? Why not! Today is the half point of the quarter. Have you checked your student's grades lately? Remember you can check them any time at engrade.com. I hear there is even a mobile version. We started looking at the history of Russia today. We tried to get through all of Russian history in one day, but it just doesn't work that way! There is just too much good stuff. We also started on earthquakes. We checked out a cool web site at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/ that shows how many earthquakes have happened in the last week.

Happy Thanks giving week! Today we stated work on a wrap up project for Europe. Instead of memorizing all of the countries of Europe and placing them on the map from memory, we are going to fill in a map with the countries  capitals and some major land marks using our resources. Remember, while there are maps in the from of the book, there are more at the start of the Europe section (before ch 10) that can be useful. We also reviewed how to change a number from a decimal to a fraction, a fraction to a decimal and a decimal to a percent.

The election is over and the winner is . . . all of us because we live in a country where we can have elections to choose our leaders with no wars or violence!

We did talk about the election some today. We also worked on finding the area of triangles and what to do when part of a rectangle gets cut out and we need to find the area of the new shape. We also took our science test. We had an interesting grouping of scores. We had a good number of A+'s and A's, then we jumped down into the B's and C's. In geo we finished up the history and culture of Europe. Not easy to cram that in to 2 days. So we didn't. We spent several more days on it, but it was worth it. We had a good trip yesterday. The kids liked riding on the bus. They also got to play a version of Jeopardy and play with science toys. Oh yea, we saw a video of a jet hitting concrete. Want to know why? Ask your student!

Today we did some house keeping things including starting to look at our home made science tests. The students spent a lot of time looking thought the material to find out what questions were good to ask. We had some very good questions and a few not so good questions. The students found out how hard it is to come up with questions, especially the wrong answers! We had the Friday morning Bible class come in for a visit during our break. We then finished off the day by having the agronomist come in and have us do some hands on activities with rocks. It was a great way to wrap up our unit on minerals and rocks!

There were no new assignments today, but there are several bigger things due on Monday that were assigned Tuesday or Wednesday.

Thanks to all of you who were able to meet with me with week. It helped quite a bit. I am looking forward to meeting with the rest of you on Monday. As you know, I will be gone on Tuesday and Wednesday to be with Thaddeus in the hospital. Have a great weekend!

Today we spent some time talking about what makes a good test question. The class is finding out that coming up with these questions is harder than they thought, especially if you aren't allowed to be silly! The class then worked on finishing their tests, using good questions. We also had a very quick history of Latin America. We took our math test and lit test today as well. We are also finishing up our five paragraph essays. We also spent some quality time working on our song that we sing in the late service on Sunday.

Today are trying something new. We are using Google forms to make our own science tests. The students are in groups looking up questions to ask on their tests. They need to find important information to base their questions on, then figure out some false answer choices as well. Then they enter it into the Google form and note the answer on a sheet of paper. After working on it for some time, most students agreed that writing a test takes a lot longer than they thought! We also reviewed how to divide fractions. That was a quick lesson since the class remembered how to do that from past years. We also took a MLC Meet Math test.

Good day! You should have gotten a note regarding parent/student/teacher conferences. It is going to be a bit different for 7th grade due to my son's surgery. Thanks for your flexibility! (By the way, if you are more interested in Thaddeus' condition, I do send out periodic email updates that you can subscribe to. I also post these to a blog at http://thaddeusupdates.blogspot.com/.)

Today we started our presentations for geography. So far I am well pleased with the work the students have done. We are learning a lot about some of the countries in Latin America. We also worked on borrowing when subtracting fractions.

Welcome to the first Friday of our first 8 day week. What? It wasn't 8 days? It sure felt like it! The kids are wiped out after a fun and action packed week. It will be good for them to get some rest and get back to the routine next week. We spent some productive time in the lab today getting started on our country presentations. We also worked on more story problems. Our math scores today were not where we wanted them (wonder if that has anything to do with a certain sports team playing last night) so we took some extra time going thought problems today in class. We also had our closing ceremony for our Olympic week. Would you believe the gold medal winner was, oh wait I better not ruin it for you. I'll let your child tell you.

Hello all. One quick announcement. 7th and 8th grade will be taking a field trip to the Point Beach Energy Center on October 18th. More details will follow.

Today we tried to settle back in the groove after our special day yesterday. Thanks to all the wonderful folks that made yesterday so special. We had a nice discussion in math today about why we are getting more wrong than we probably should be. The students suggested (really, it wasn't me that brought it up) that it might be due to rushing and not checking our work. Let's keep trying to do the best job we can! We then looked at some more story problems. We also are working on a paragraph in the third person. Over all we did well on our first person paragraphs. We did some review in geography and will have the study guide to correct in science tomorrow.

Have a great night.

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Happy day to you! We did a nice job on our geography test today. We also looked at each other's rough drafts for English. Hopefully we were able to help each other out. We also looked at story problems in math. The problems are quite simple, as long as we figure out what the problem actually is of course. We also heard about some protests in Egypt at the US embassy. We will have to keep an eye on that! Pray that God is with our soldiers there.

Please remember that picture order forms are due back THIS FRIDAY!

Well here we are on a rainy Friday. We started the day with a chat about expectations and the students really seemed to be making an effort to meet my goals. Thanks! We learned about Mozart today. He started to teach himself to play the piano at the age of 4 and composed his first musical piece before he was 6! We also took a math test. If the speed with which the class got done with the test is any indication, then it was pretty easy. We also did some work for Grand Day.

Just an FYI. Thaddeus had some tests done a few weeks back and it was decided due to deteriorating oxygen distribution that his third surgery needed to be moved up significantly. The surgery is now scheduled for Tuesday October 23rd. This will cause us to need to have some flexibility in scheduling parent teacher conferences. I will be in touch when the date gets closer.

Hello everyone. It was a bit of a wild day back today. Some students seemed to have forgotten we were back in school! We had a good day none the less. We reviewed the US and Canada a bit and will be ready for the test tomorrow. We also decided that we need to work a bit more on being careful on our math assignments. We looked at fractions and measuring with rulers. Really just a lot of counting. In English we went over the different parts of classifying sentences. We had a hard time working together at times, but brought it all together in the end.

Welcome back! Thanks for stopping by. We had a few big events today. One was our fist day of Junior Choir. Another was our science test. We averaged an 81%, which is a C+. The short answer questions gave us a bit of trouble, so we will need to take another look at those tomorrow. We also looked at how, to ; properly punctuate. sentences! We also had our first math test.

Our first map test is this Thursday. I have given the students a study guide map to practice on. On Thursday I will give them another map just like that one except the numbers will be rearranged. The students will then need to write down each state and capitol next to the number that represents that state on the map.

Our first Friday of the year went pretty well although one of our students had to phone a friend and then lost the million dollar question. However, since I don't have a million dollars to give him anyhow, it is just as well. We corrected our study guide and took a look at how our computerized test is going to go on Monday for geography. We also took a some time to compare our science reviews and make sure those are right before Monday comes along. We spent some time working with number lines and types of sentences. We also spent some time with Joseph Haydn. By age three his family knew he was going to be involved in music. Thaddeus Loves to dance, does that count? We listened to part of his Surprise, Toy and Farewell symphonies.

"The ants go marching one by one . . " and so do the days. Today we reviewed in math how to solve equations that have variables in them. We also talked about maps and go to watch a short video about the short comings of the Mercator Projection. (It is cooler than it sounds, really.) We also talked about different economic systems and put Jonah in charge of the toaster factory and Hanna got to make extension cords. We also studied why trade is so important for us in our globalized world.

Welcome welcome welcome!

First of all let me say a hearty hi ho to anyone who signed up to get this by email last year and is still getting it now. HI! You can unsubscribe at the bottom of the email. Secondly, for the rest of you, please note at the bottom of the blog where you can sign up to get this blog delivered to you by email each day. It is convenient!

I registered the class for the online math book. Your student got their log on information and password today (not the 6th  graders who come in, they should get it tomorrow). If you go to my.hrw.com your student can see an online version of the book. There are also some tools and certain lessons have interactives as well.

We underwent another schedule change. Bear with me! We just moved break from before geography to after. The time isn't as good, but it keeps us out of other classes way. It also gives us a few more minutes for geography.

Today we had the Fond du Lac Children's Chorale come and sing for us. They did a great job, especially that short blonde 7th grade girl! We also got ready for some tests tomorrow.

Today we took our field trip. We had an excellent time and most all of the information that was discussed ties in directly to our science class. Thanks to all the parents who came along. Our one presenter was having so much fun with liquid nitrogen that he even went 30 min longer than he was supposed to! We still made it back in time for a little bit of literature.

Assignments are the same as yesterday.

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

Please make sure your student has a lunch packed for tomorrow. We will leave after devotion and be back long before the school day is done.

Today we took our Science test and averaged a B+. We also reviewed for geography. The test will be Friday. In math we looked at how to solve equations that have exponents in them. We also discussed how to be wise consumers of health products. Watch out for quackery!

We will do the memory work on Friday, otherwise all assignments will be due as normal despite the field trip.

Welcome to another Monday. Not too many left in the school year anymore! Where has the time gone! Today we finished up our science chapter. We also looked at how to find the slope of a line in math. We looked at the four principal parts of verbs and even checked out the emphatic form. (We did study the emphatic form.) We even heard about some storms that went through some place called Wisconsin last night. To end the day we got Bilbo out of the goblin caves, but not far enough!

We also had a very nice presentation by the president of MLC.

Welcome to another Friday edition of the 7th grade blog. Today we finished our Monet video and checked out a funky (for lack of a better word) web site about Monet's art work. Check it out at www.monet2010.com. We also had a nice short lesson in math (which was good since yesterdays was loooong) about taking care of literal equations. All that means is rearranging equations to solve for a different letter. If A = B + C then B = A - C. In geography we started looking at the history of East Asia and I went on and on about Korea, and Vietnam and World War II and so on and on. I just had so many things to share! We also got 'spacey' in science and looked at some of the space craft that NASA designed to work for 3 months to two years and were still going 30 YEARS LATER! (Speaking of rockets North Korea's failed. )In English we reviewed and then looked ahead to the principal parts of verbs. We will get fully into that on Monday.

Anyhow

Mission offering tomorrow. The offering this month goes to help Christian Aid and Relief. They have been active helping out communities around the world and even families in Fond du Lac.

The science quiz for tomorrow was handed out at the end of the day today. We will take it like a worksheet since it is so long and we didn't get to cover everything on it today.

The website for Literature just isn't working consistently enough for us to use. We will give up on myfakewall.com and move on to plan B.

We got to play with parts of circles in math. We are also ready to go for our geo test tomorrow. We also discussed how to deal with irregular verbs and what the perfect tense means.

For literature, the website has been a bit iffy, so do the best that you can.

We enjoyed the Koine worship service at WLA today. We also got to walk there and back. It was a good warm up for when we start running the mile!

Today I introduced the students to myfakepage.com. It is a web site that creates a private, fake facebook page. We will be using this for Literature. The students will be pretending that they are the main character and will be making status updates each time we read part of the story. It should be a fun way to have them show me they are following the story.

Have a blessed weekend remembering the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord!

Hello again. Nice to have you back. We got to work with the Pythagerean Theorem today. We also checked out the Muslim countries of South Asia. Did you know that Bangladesh has one of the highest population densities in the world? In English we are practicing more with object compliments. These are words that tell what has happened to the direct object after the action of the verb was applied. For example, "We elected him president." President tells us what we elected him. It tells us more about him after he was elected. We also looked at the ways we use the land and what affect that can have on the environment. (It fit in very well with our presentation on the Friday before break!)

Please return the report card envelope, the filed trip form, and the note for singing in church. Thanks!

Remember that you can have this blog emailed to you daily for your convenience!

It's Monday and we are back into the swing of things. It is kind of odd to have the temps back where they belong, for one day at least. We started looking at South Asia as it is today. We also looked at how to figure out the scale factor in shapes. We also reviewed object compliment nouns and adjectives and we are looking at how we use our land. Oh yea, Billy won the hunting contest!

Please send back the report card envelopes. I sent home our report cards before break.

I sent home report cards today. Please look for those and send back the envelopes when we get back. Thanks!

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather, I know we are! We are also enjoying averaging a B on our science test and watching Robert Ballard go to the ocean depths back many years. Hopefully we will soon be able to see James Cameron go to the depths as well. We also also did some work on angles and the distributive property. 3(x-2) = 3x-6 We also corrected our geography reviews for our test tomorrow. We are also looking forward to our guest speaker tomorrow who will tell us more about pollution.

Good day to one and all. After 4 months of spring summer is here! At least it seems that way doesn't it? Anyhow we looked at compound probability today. Happy Thursday! Did you miss me yesterday? Sorry about that, things got very busy very quickly and I didn't think about it until late last night. Today we started a new section for science and geography. We also got Billy chasing the Ghost Coon and we did some work with problems with a lot of negative signs in them. We also had  very robust discussions in Christ Light today. It was great! By the way we averaged a B on both our geo and sci tests. We also average a B+ on our map test. I gave the students 4 freebies, and some people even ended up with extra credit. Way to go!

Well it is Friday and what a Friday. We had a visitor, some tests, a video and even some study time.

We had Eric come and visit us today. He is planning on coming to our school next year and wanted to get to know his future classmates a bit. We had a relatively calm day for him. We had a messy art period, but then we took at test, followed that with another test, started a video, did some correcting and some music, and then we were ready for lunch already. We did get some good character development and good examples of descriptive writing in our story though.

Welcome to Tuesday! It was kind of funny as we looked at the climates of Africa countries last week, we kept mentioning how WI gets more snow than the countries of Africa. It certainly didn't feel much like it before, but we may be working on changing that this week.

Anyhow we did look at the African climate regions today. We also worked on transformations in math. No not transformers! We also reviewed for our science test a bit. Be ready for the test tomorrow, but I may let us watch the video before the test which would put the test on Thursday though. We also got to hear some of the 'last chapter' projects for literature.

Well it is Monday again. How is yours going? Well I hope! We started off the day by wrapping up our discussion on how we can get along better with our friends. Then we took a pre-test for spelling. We have names from places and people this week. Things like hamburger and frankfurter. Makes me hungry just typing about it. We then jumped into how to work with problems that may have not enough information, or may have just enough to make a comparison. (IF x is negative and y is positive, I don't have enough info to tell you what the numbers are but I can tell you that y is greater than x.) We followed that up by looking at the physical features of Africa. We then talked about our upcoming museum box project. We spent a lot of time finishing up our science section on weather as well. We finished off the day with some study time.

Hey it's Tuesday! Wow, everything took longer than I thought it would today. Wonder if it is the weather? Anyhow we did manage to get through the prezis for two countries today. We also worked through math problems involving percents. The example problems are all done for you on the picture above. (Fun with the Smart Board!) Our science quiz took some time so while we got through thunderstorms and tornadoes, we didn't make it all the way through hurricanes. We will finish up tomorrow.

Happy Monday to you, happy Monday to you, happy Monday Dear reader, Happy Monday to you. I was told today that no one reads the blog, so thanks for being here to prove that person wrong.

Today we worked out some complex fractions. Those are fractions within fractions like 2/3 over 4/5. We know how to simplify those now! (5/6 by the way) We also took an overview look at Africa south of the Sahara dessert. We have been working on our song for church. Remember it got moved from the 12th to the 19th of this month. We are also learning about weather including what relative humidity means.

Hello my friends, thanks for dropping in for a visit. We had a fine day today as we learned about how to get along as families. We took more time to work on solving equations with fractional numbers in them. (What fraction of the people read the blog if five out of 17 people read the blog?) We also got ready for our geo test tomorrow and took our science test today. We averaged a B. We also got to watch more of the Animal Farm movie. Ask your student about all the things that were different.

Thanks for the good turnout last night. It was an interesting presentation with some great handouts and worth the time. Today we started the Animal Farm  movie and already saw quite a few differences. We also talked about how to multiply numbers with positive and negative signs on them. We also talked about trying out a variety of fitness activities and finding some we can do for a lifetime. We are also ready to our science test tomorrow.
