An action packed Friday! We worked on a math pretest, a science pretest and learned more about Nelson Mandella and South Africa! The class did quite well on our hymn this week! Most of the class was in the 'A' category.

Just an FYI, I will be gone Monday and Tuesday at a HUGE tech conference that starts Sunday afternoon. I am signed up to learn more about (among other things) Chromebooks, managing and using, and also how to manage Apple devices.

Congrats on making it all the way to Wednesday. Today we looked at colonial rule in Africa. All but around 3 countries were controlled by Europeans. We also watched some volcanoes erupt. In math, we talked about finding the fractional part of a number. As you know, I have been posting the work we do as part of the lesson on the blog. This way, students can look back at the sample problems and refresh their memory on what to do. Since most of them don't check the blog, I also printed off the pages for the students to reference. I hope they use these to check on their work when needed.

The days keep on rolling! The big ticket item today was math, as you can see below. The rules for dealing with negatives change for multiplication and division from what they were for addition and subtraction. It no longer matters which one is bigger! (We went over that several times today.)

These Mondays keep sneaking up on us! I don' tknow about you, but I don't know where they come from! Today we looked at some African history. We tried a different web sight for this than we did for finishing up the science section. We also did implied ratios in math, as you can see below. Besides Mondays, faculty meetings sneak up on me as well. Got to go!

I am happy to welcome you to Thursday. We tried out Nearpod again today, it looks like it has some potential with some work. We found out why some volcanoes explode gently and some do so violently. We also did something a little different for literature as well (just a little different). For math, we took the investigation again. I heard some good peer teaching today, good job! In Christ Light we talked about how to get along with those who have different beliefs than we do. That led us to spend some time talking about abortion. We had some good questions. You may want to follow up at home.

Wednesday, February 17, 2016

Hello, hello, hello! It's Wednesday again and another opportunity to praise the Lord at an Advent service tonight. I hope I saw you there! Today we tried something new. I gave a website called Nearpod a try. It lets me send a presentation to the students' Chromebooks and control which slide they are on. The students liked that they had it right in front of them so it didn't matter where they sat. Some also found it easier to focus just on the screen. The part I liked better was that I could ask them questions and have each of them type a response that I then got a few seconds later. It was a quick way to see if they were getting the idea. We will try it a few more lessons and see how we like it. There is a similar one I should try as well to compare. Exciting things to try out!

Our investigation for math that was due today did not go super well. It was designed to try and get the students to work on showing every step of the work. They would rather not, but based on the problems we keep getting wrong, we need to do it anyhow. We went over it today before our test and will try again tomorrow. Who would have thought showing your work and checking your answers would be so hard!

Welcome back Monday! (No, not Kotter.) We took a Meet Math test today and worked on our pre-test for our math. We also took the science test and spent some time reviewing for tomorrow's catechism test. We also did some reading on the WELS missions in Africa. I asked the students to share one thing from each article that they read. They were to put that info into a shared Google Document and when we are all done, we will have one fact from each student per article. If you want to see how it is going, click HERE.
