One more Monday down. God only knows how many are left! Today we solved some more algebraic problems. This time we had to write the problem first and then solve it. We also read each other's rough drafts and made some, hopefully, helpful comments. We started talking about weather. I certainly had some real life current examples to show the students today! (For example, do you know what happens when warm wet air from the south hits cold air from the north? If not, you should by the time Wednesday is over.) We also took a crack at translating a Shakespeare speech into modern language. Mix that up with a geography review and a map retake (I really thought more people would take advantage of this) and we've got a day!

Konnichi wa! Thanks for visiting! Today we continued to talk about how God wants us to treat this planet of ours. We got a special visit from Reverend Boggs, (yea! free folders), figured out that two wrongs may not make a right, but two negatives multiplied together do make a positive! We took our science test after learning more about cultures in Africa. After the science test, the students were doing a great job studying so we just turned on a little more of the Julius Caesar movie. Brando back in the day. (Did you know he is in Guys and Dolls, too? Check it out if you like musicals.)

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Today we took another crack at taking a test on the lab computers. It was neat because the students got instant feedback on the questions they got wrong and what the right answers should have been. I am still trying to work out a few things, but it has been an interesting experiment. We also talked briefly about writing a business letter. We included format and what to say. We also looked at ratio problems again. This time the total was missing. We looked at Shakespearean word order as well. Top that off with local and global winds and I'd say we had a full day.

Hello again my friends! Today we worked on solving equations by balancing both sides. 3x + 4 = 16. We subtract the 4 from BOTH sides and then divide BOTH sides by 3. We took our map test and quiz in geography and then worked in class on the review. We started a new art project and finished up several other things for English.

Today most of us finished recording our narratives. I look forwards to hearing them. We went through our pun worksheets for literature. Did you know there are an estimated 114 puns in Macbeth alone? Yikes!

For Geography, I have given the students two maps. There was some confusion about this. The landforms map is due tomorrow. The countries of the central region will be due next week. Only the land form maps is due for tomorrow.

We also have 3 passages and 2 hymn verses due for memory work tomorrow, along with a spelling test and the academic fair outline.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

We had a little bit of an unusual day today. We took our science test on the computers in our new (pre-owned) lab. We also watched an animated version of Shakespeare's MacBeth. To top that off, we started recording our narratives using a free program called Audacity. It lets you record and play with audio. If your child asks about downloading it at home, it is legit, and it is free. What they do with it after that is up to you.

I apologize! I forgot to send home the report cards today. I have emailed them and plan to hand out the paper copies tomorrow. Sorry about that. We did manage to remember to review for our test on the Middle East, talk about algebraic addition 3 - (-3) is the same as 3 + [- (-3)] which of course is really just 3 +3, and review how to do an outline. We also learned some more vocab for science. To end it off we discussed how a different actor doing the same lines of a play change the meaning. (Do you have any idea how many different versions of Hamlet there are?)

Happy Friday! Today we looked at some art work by Mary Cassatt http://www.marycassatt.org . We then tried our hand at working with oil pastels. We also classified triangles and took a geography test. That went quite well by the way. We are also continuing to work with quotation marks. I looked over the resources for those who brought them, and then we had some time to take notes on the resources.

Congratulations to our school's latest spelling be champion, Mitch! It was an exciting finish to be sure. That's not all we did today though. We finished discussing how to deal with quotation marks, found the area and angles of parallelograms, review for the geography test and took the science test. A productive day all in all. We even found time to learn more about the Rossetta Stone.

Resources for the academic fair project are due. Ideally the student should bring in his or her books for me to look at. If they are still coming from another library, it is ok to bring in a print out from the library so I can get an idea of what the books are about. I will try to look at web sites as well. The student should have the URL available for me.

One more day under our belt! While I am thinking of it, thanks so much for the Christmas gifts! I was able to share the food I received thereby making me tops with the family! I am looking forward to delving into the books, but with the baby almost here and the class I am taking, I am planning to wait till summer.

Today we finished our look at the Middle East. We talked about how many conflicts have arisen due to religious differences, and in fact still do, as witnessed by the bombing in Egypt. We moved on to discussing all of the different names for polygons. Did you know that a square is a polygon, a parallelogram, a rhombus, a rectangle and a square all at the same time? After that we looked at food labels and talked about how important serving size is when analyzing food labels. Toss in some indirect objects and earthquakes and we had quite a day.
