MERRY CHRISTMAS! They did a great job at the service. Thanks for the food and the gifts! We are set for Christmas Eve, other than I could use some cups, plates and napkins.

In January, 7th grade will be organizing a collection for Solutions Center. Look for more information to come.

Happy Last school Tuesday of the year! We practiced practicing! We are working on remembering how the lines start and saying them with enthusiasm. We also worked on making graphs today. We will take our math test on THURSDAY. We also have been working hard on music theory and have some work with scales coming.

We did lots of practicing for the Christmas Service. I had the students work without copies today and I was impressed at how well some of them are doing already.

We also worked on  shared presentation again today for geography. We are taking a little peek at some of the lesser known European Countries. (8th grade was gone so we grabbed the Chromebooks!) In addition, we added and subtracted numbers that had different units. Like 12 hours and 27 min. plus 3 hours and 55 min.

Hello again! I was at a tech conference this morning. I learned a few interesting things about where technology seems to be heading! Meanwhile your students were trying to learn about fraction-decimal-percent equivalents. This is really review, but that is good because we are again having trouble with remembering that when we change a percent to a decimal, we can't just erase the percent sign. (83.5% is not the same as 83.5). They also are working on how to combine short choppy sentences into longer, better flowing sentences. For example, instead of writing "Mr. Rosenthal went to a conference. The conference was about technology. Mr. Rosenthal learned some new things". They should write,  "Mr. Rosenthal went to a conference on technology and learned some new things."

OK, not that brief. We talked about wind erosion today. We focused in on the difference between deflation and abrasion. We also are looking at key signatures in music. In math we worked on powers of 10. It's really just more counting. (We do a lot of counting in 7th grade math.)

Happy Tuesday! At least it warmed up some. You may live in WI if your teacher checks the temp and says, "It's 26 degrees. We'll go outside since it is warm out." We also worked with dividing by decimal numbers. We are having a bit of trouble figuring out which number goes inside the box and which one is outside. Also, remember not to forget about the decimal and any needed 0's in the answer. We also reviewed where to put, and, not, to, put, commas in certain kinds of sentences.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! May God bless you all during this mini break from school. A few tidbits for you.

Research papers were handed out today. The quality ranged but those who made the corrections I suggested on their rough drafts, did quite well. Nice job!

The last few math sets handed in were not the quality we were looking for in most cases, so we had a corrections day today. The only assignment was to work on fixing what he or she got wrong on the past few lessons. I managed to get today's corrected and handed back during that time as well, and then took lots of questions to help students get it right the second time.

The students did a nice job on the memory work hymn from last week. We will be working on Christmas service things starting next week.

Safe travels (and hunting) and God bless your holiday.

Monday, November 24, 2014

Welcome to a snowy Monday. We looked at converting decimals to fractions and percents and all around. We also worked on an open book science test. There was some confusion about the test being timed with the timer on the board so we will need work on that a bit tomorrow. We tried something new for geography. The students were put in groups and each group was assigned a section of section two of chapter 12. Each group joined a shared Google presentation and put in the information they thought was the most important. You can check out the result here. We had a few hiccups, but in the end it worked pretty well.

Please encourage your student to take his/her time on math. Thanks!

Welcome to a blustery Wednesday. We took our math test today and a DMLC Meet Math test as well. We did pretty well on Meet math> Hopefully we did well on the regular test as well. We corrected our science tests from Friday as well. We had a wide spread of scores on the test, but we did have about 32% of the class get in the A range. Good job to those students. We took some time to talk about soil today. Tomorrow might get a little dirty.

Tuesday has sprung on us again. Today we looked at an interesting map. A map that shows us the countries that Great Britain has not invaded at some time or another. There are only 22. That explains the far reaching impact of their culture! We also looked at how low birth rates and high immigration are changing Europe. We did an investigation on box and whisker plots. It was a rough geography class today. As king I made 5 barons and baronesses, but then I got two killed off in the crusades and took over their land. Then the plague killed 7 of the class as well. Happy Thursday, no wait Monday, no Tuesday? Oh yea, WEDNESDAY! It' s been one of those weeks I tell ya. We checked out some vids on the European Union and they did a good job of explaining to us that it is COMPLICATED! EU This is my favorite one. We also looked at graphs in math and learned there are different kinds for different purposes. Also, you have to be careful because graphs can be manipulated to look a certain way. We also corrected our study guide for science and then played a few review games. We will take the test on Friday. We also started a new novel Where the Red Fern Grows for literature. Considering the hunters in this room, it should go over well.

Did you check out those Packers! We found a typo in my math lesson today that I think was from one of the times the Packers scored. Wow! Our day was not quite as exciting as the game, but we did have the agricultural ambassador come and talk about nutrition and give us cheese! The class also got to hang out with Pastor Parsons for a bit while I got our network working again. We worked on our geo activity for the EU today as well. Most groups are done, for those who are not the CIA factbook is a great resource for this. Just go to the site and then search for European Union. Or try this link. In math we talked about ratios and sample space when dealing with probability. We also finished with  our version of A Christmas Carol.

Hello again! We had an interesting trip yesterday. It turns out the coordinator there told me Wednesday but wrote down Thursday, so no one was there when we got there! We got someone to come on over and help us out and we got it done in the end. Phew!

Today we did a math pretest with a partner to get ready for the test tomorrow. We also didn't not talk about double negatives, the climate of Europe and metamorphic rocks.

Rough Draft day! Maybe not as exciting as draft day, but I am excited because I got almost all of the rough drafts on time! Now I have to find time to read them all of course. That will be the project right after report cards. Speaking of those, look for them on Friday.

Also, remember that your student has a second project to do for LH night. They should be working on that while they wait for their rough draft back.

Today we worked on coordinate planes in math. We did a few examples and got the idea pretty well. We also reviewed a few things before our test tomorrow. Tonight they may be looking over their pretest to make sure they know what to do. We also started reading a play adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Thursday is today! We took more time to work on our LH project today. We also spent some time talking about parts of the project. HI! I emailed the parent teacher conference schedule to everyone. I also plan to send a paper copy home today as well. Let me know if you don't get one. Your children are encouraged, but not required, to come to 7th grade conferences. I am basically booked solid so we will have to work hard on staying on time. (So don't get me started talking about my children or I'll never make it!)

Today we took some more time to work on the Living History project. Remember that the rough draft is due on Monday. Just to clarify, I am looking at this rough draft to be as close to final as possible. It is often recommended that the first draft of a paper is all about getting the ideas on paper. You don't worry about punctuation and grammar and so on. That is great to do, but not what I am looking for on this. I plan to go through the papers fairly thoroughly and mark whatever I find that is incorrect or could be improved. Then I will give that back to the student to correct for their final copy that will be graded and on display for the Living History Night. So in that sense it might be more correct to think of this as the second or even third draft that gets handed in. As long as the students correct what I mark and work off of my suggestions, there shouldn't be any reason for them to get less than a B+ if not better on the final copy.

Happy Friday! I sent home some paper copies of the email you got for Parent Teacher conferences. If you didn't have it in today, please get it to me on Monday. We hope to work on the schedules in faculty meeting. Officially we are going until 6 on that Monday and Tuesday, but I am planning on going later than that so that I can fit everyone in on Monday and Tuesday, especially if your 7th grader is your only student at Faith since we try to schedule all of students from one family back to back. (Or in my case back to back to back to back to back to back to back, ok I don't have THAT many kids)

Keep working at the Living History project. We skipped some classes today to have some time to work on it, especially notes and the outline. The rough draft is coming up soon, plus, remember that the students are to have another project from the sheet besides the paper.

Happy news by the way. We averaged an A- on the math test! Whoooo! Nice work students.

I have almost all of the field trip forms. Thanks for that.

Happy Thursday to you! Math test so we had no homework. Hopefully we did as well on this test as we did on the last. We also got our science tests corrected to day as well. Unfortunately, we didn't do as well as hoped on average considering we had all the questions and answers ahead of time.

Keep an eye Engrade. We still have some late work that needs to be handed in. I am working on correcting all the late work so you will be able to check on your student's progress.

Field trip forms were due today. Thanks to everyone who got them in on time. If you didn't yet, please get it in tomorrow along with the parent teacher conference form.

We had a sweet day today with a presentation about bee keeping and harvesting honey. There were samples! We took out science test today and then had a chunk of time to work on literature and living history. We started watching the movie version of Hatchet today as well. In addition, we spent the entire math period reviewing before our test tomorrow.

Field trip slips are due tomorrow and Parent Teacher slips are due by Friday.

Happy Tuesday to you. It looks beautiful out there and feels pretty good to! Science test tomorrow. In math we divided fractions. We are planning on a test for Thursday with some review tomorrow. In English we spent some time talking about outlines. I told the students that for Monday they need to have sub points. They may not have just four main points and that is it. There isn't a certain length but there needs to be enough to turn it into a four page plus paper.

A quick post on the notes. Approximately 85% of the class got some notes in today. Most all of those students got an A+ for doing so. Those who did not received a 0%. However, while most of the class got notes in, there were not nearly enough notes to write 4 plus pages on. We have a LOT of work to do yet and time is running out. Remember the outline is due on Monday.
I started my day of early with not one, but two dead computers! However, I manged to work around it and eventually got both working. Yea! That didn't stop us from talking about cultures in Latin America. Well, first we reviewed the key points from the last lesson, since we either worn't listening or forgot them since the first time around. (That was a week ago!) We also collected our notes for the Living History project. I will check them over to make sure your student is making progress. Remember the outline is due next Monday. Speaking of reminders, don't forget to get the field trip form back to school. Also, remember that the date is Nov. 5th not the 7th. In math we looked at reducing fractions part two. We learned what I call the shortcut method to reducing. It works quite well I think! We also corrected our science study guide. Many students completed it and did quite well.

BUSY BUSY day. We ran into a pond to escape mean people and climbed into a plane that was mostly underwater to get a survival pack, and that was all in the last hour of the day! Plus we traveled to Latin America and also reviewed borrowing when we subtract fractions. We also watched snails race, but that got too exciting so we had to stop watching before the end of the race.

A couple of quick notes on Parent Teacher conferences.

1. If your 7th grader is your only child at Faith, I will be happy to meet with you after 6 pm on Monday or Tuesday night. Please let me know.

2. Your child is invited to come along. If you need your child to babysit or he/she is unavailable that is OK, they are not required to come, but I do think it is valuable in most cases to have them along.

3.  I can meet with you on Wednesday if that is the only time that works for you, but otherwise I am happy to make Monday and Tuesday work.
Soccer game today! Will they stay dry? We are going to try! We knocked off a couple more tests today and just one little one left for tomorrow! Good job students!

Wednesday involved more testing, but we are getting though it. Today we took a series of math tests instead of having math class. That made the testing more bearable for the students. We also started a Prezi presentations. They are going fairly well. One tip is to make sure your student has at least the items mentioned on the guide sheet. Those are big ones I look for.

Tuesday, September 30, 2014

Today for math we work on prime factorization. We learned two different ways to find the prime factors, then we found the GCF using those prime factors. We also started a new book for our read Teacher Reads time. Good news, we did well on our math test yesterday.

WE ARE GOING ON A FIELD TRIP NOVEMBER 7th. Look for the permission sip. We will eat a cold lunch at the location.

Monday comes so quickly doesn't it?  Some students commented on being up very late last night. Please encourage your students to get a good night's rest. Thanks! We started testing today with the reading test parts one and two. Tomorrow we plan to get some language arts tests in. Wednesday and Thursday will be the big test days. We tried to start our Prezsi's today, but since none of the people who were up today were ready, we had a lesson instead. I guess it is a good thing I didn't keep the due date on Friday! We will try again as soon as we are able.

Happy Friday! The students had a happy Friday since we smuggled the Chromebooks into the 7th grade room today and got everyone online and working. We did a few vocabulary games on the Vocabulary Workshop web site. Then we got down to business working on our Prezis and/or Living History  projects. I think we made some good progress both on the content and on using the technology. That also meant that we had less time to get assignments! Works out well with a beautiful weather weekend (and soccer tournament) ahead.

Don't forget, testing next week.

Back for more? Great! Today we went through the entire math pretest as a group. Hopefully that helps us pass our test on Monday. In science we talked more about atoms and protons, newtrons, and electrons. We then filled out a chart on the board on how these interact with one another. We then had a chance to do the sheet on our own. In Vocab Workshop we talked about how knowing root words can help us spell and define words. We also spent some time practicing our hymn.

Remember that tomorrow I am scheduling time to work on Living History night and Prezis. Please have your student bring anything he/she may need.

Happy Wednesday to you. On Friday we are going to be having a work day. We are going to take some time (not all day) to work on our Prezi and Living History projects. Since 8th grade will be gone at WLA, I am hoping we will be able to use the Chrome books to get some work done on both projects. It will also give me a chance to monitor how our network handles that much traffic at once. Please help remind your student to bring anything they may need to work on these such as a resource book. We will start presenting the Prezis on Monday.

Today we talked about area and using squares and square roots. We also started learning about Latin America. We mostly heard about lots of mountains and waterways. There was also an incident with a skunk in literature.

Thus another day marches on. Today the big news was perimeter. We went around and around with it covering the length and width of the issue until we all could see outside the polygon. We spent a few min going over the thesis statements. We are getting more of them where they need to be, but some are still going to need some work. We also learned about rules for subject verb agreement with the weird stuff like collective nouns (crowd, band) and nous that look plural but are actually singular (mumps, news). We have a practice sheet, but I am sure there will be some questions tomorrow.

P.S. I missed celebrating my 1,000th post to this blog. So, congratulations on being part of my 1,005th post to this blog about the goings on in 7th grade!

We spent a chunk of time discussing thesis statements today. We used a few websites that gave examples and some suggestions, especially the "so what" test. Check them out if you'd like. First site Second site. We also found out about the 'new' Brian, discussed similar and congruent figures and even heard about a polygon party. We also are working on our Prezzis. It is Friday and there is Faith and Fun tonight! Be that as it may, we still did lots of work today. We Wrote our hymn, got intro'd to our new hymn, and learned that the guy who wrote the hymn wrote almost 2,500 hymns total! Ask your student how many of those made Christian Worship. We also talked about connotation and denotation in words. Questioned, grilled, interrogated and interviewed all mean the same thing, but we don't think about them the same. We also talked about possessive pronouns and nouns.(For example) Ask your student about HIS classwork. Then we took our science test about science. (Imagine that.) In current events we learned that the UK survived the historic vote in Scotland. Then for geography we played with maps some more.

It's been a busy day to end a busy week. Well not end, since many of us have at least one tournament this weekend. GO PANTHERS! (When is nap time?)

One last thought. Ask to see your student's assignment notebook. I am not seeing them used much at all, and I am also seeing work not getting handed in on time or even done on time. There might be a connection.

What beautiful weather we are having today. The big thing today was that we talked about our first quarter geo country project. The students got their assigned country and their log on information. (A few students did not get their info, I am investigating that.) We also finished The Outsiders today. Many students would like to see the movie; however, due to some language in the movie, we won't be watching it in class. It is rated PG but be advised that it was made before PG-13 was a rating if you'd like to watch it at home.

Tomorrow I will be taking a technology day. We have some nagging issues that need dealing with so Mr. H decided to get a sub for me so that I can spend the day trying to make some headway on these tech issues. I will still be around the building, but the sub will be handling the classroom duties.

We took our math test today. I look forward to seeing how we did. We also took another chapter in class for literature. That seems to be working a bit better. In science we finished our section on science. We talked about how to do it ethically, but how science can not answer ethic questions.

So another school day is crashing towards its close. Math we have a test tomorrow. We will not be doing a pretest as a class this time around. Right now I have planned to do a pretest every other test and see how it goes.  We did some review for our math lesson today. We talked about equivalent fractions. However, since you need to know how to do that in order to reduce or add fractions, it should have been pretty much review.

Did you know that tomorrow is the halfway point of our quarter? Check up on your student using Engrade. Your log on information should be the same as you set up last year. Let me know if you need help.

Living History topics were due on Monday. I didn't remind the students and as a result got none. SO, let's make it before the week is over, I should have your student's topic in my hand. Thanks!
Just a reminder the due dates are in the packet I handed out to the parents on orientation night and again a couple of weeks ago to the students.

We tried to explain the entire history of the US and Canada today. There was too much. We summed up. We also tried to figure out how we make electricity. Turns out we boil water and turn a turbine. Fractions continued to grace us with their presence as well.

Picture day! What pretty children we have!

Today we spent time going over lesson 8 in math. We picked out the problems that gave us the most trouble and did them again in class. We then had some time to work on corrections. I also made copies of yesterday's English assignment available to anyone who wanted to redo it. Check with your student to see if they took one. For science we started looking at Earth's energy resources and how some are non-renewable and what the means. We talked about good coal and bad coal among other things. We also got a lot of science teasers during our geography discussion of the US and Canada. (We even talked about having dessert in the desert.)

Our literature sheets are due tomorrow, but if your student has been working on them through all five chapters, there shouldn't be much left. The homework should be pretty light tonight so please encourage your student to do any or all of the following: 1. Work on math corrections. Most students got lesson 8 done during class, but they could work on lesson 7 as well. 2. Work on the hymn for Friday. The verses are shorter than normal, but there are six of them. Waiting until Thursday night or Friday morning is not a good idea. 3. Keep working on AR points. The students got their goals today. Very few have taken any tests yet.

Book orders are due next week Thursday. You can order online using the code on the order forms. Otherwise make out any checks to me as I will pay by credit card.

Lions and tigers and bears! Oh my!

Today we spent some time talking about the importance of following directions. We had some grades that would have been much better if the directions were followed. If anyone would like to take another crack at it, have them speak to me.

In math we worked on working with fractions and their reciprocals. Remember when adding and subtracting fractions we need common denominators; when multiplying we do not. When dividing fractions we flip the SECOND one and then multiply.

Mr. Ehlke came in to speak to us about band. It is a wonderful experience that I highly recommend. I am on my second and third children in the grade school band program and it continues to be a wonderful experience for my children. Also, it is a great value. You will be hard pressed to find anything else that offers as much as the band program for such a reasonable fee. (I've tried.) If you are at all interested talk to Mr. Ehlke about specifics.

Hey, so glad you could make it again! We started our day of with some more health information. Today for math, we took a time out and spent some time reviewing some things that were causing us some trouble. We spent the rest of the time working on corrections. We are having some trouble with some of our computations and direction following, so it was  good chance to go back over and check our work. Corrections on sets 4 and 5 are mandatory regardless of grade. However, the grade can be raised up to a maximum of a B+ if it was lower to begin with. We also took some time to work on our Science test study guide with a partner. We will correct the study guide tomorrow for a grade and take the real version on Friday. We also started comparing the US and Canada. Scissors were involved but everyone survived.

Happy Monday! Or should I say Happy WET Monday! We covered a lot of ground today. We started the day by heading into church for a neat presentation about our spiritual health. (It is Fun and Fitness week after all!) We then finished up lesson 1 of Christ Light where we talked about why we should spread God's Word and how we can do it. We learned that God will help us! In Math we worked on converting numbers to words and back again. We then looked at maps and why they can cause us problems about also help us out. In current events we heard more about ISIS. Scary stuff. For geography we got a crash coarse on economies. We also put a tariff on pens and erasers. Then we worked on getting Brian done on the ground. We finished off the day learning about our teams for Faith and Fun!

There is most likely memory work due for pastor tomorrow.

It sure is humid out! We played it cool in class today. We talked about being careful in our math work. (We made some preventable mistakes the past two days) and we looked at using a number line to help us work with negative numbers. We also discussed our first hymn "With the Lord Begin Your Task" which will be our memory treasure for next Friday. We also learned more about latitude and longitude and Battleship. (Ask your student about that one.) We have also been keeping up with current events and have a sheet to help us review the week. Joseph Haydn also made the topic list today as well as a few other things.

We were back for more today. We started our first section in science. We spent much of our time working on notes. Once we get the hang of what I am looking for, this should speed up. We also looked at different properties of math. Things we have known how to do for years, we just didn't know it had names! We also took our Star Reading test. This will help set our reading levels and goals for AR this quarter.

Welcome one and all! The new school year is almost upon us! I have gotten a lot of reading done this summer and prepared some changes for the new school year. May God continue to bless us as we work under the theme of We Preach Christ Crucified. If you are getting this by email from last year's class, you probably want to unsubscribe. (Usually there is a button on the bottom of the email to do that.) If you are reading this online and are part of the new class, I suggest you go ahead and subscribe for this year. There is a link on the blog page. I am looking for a new year of learning!

Not much to say but see you tonight and HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

Monday, May 19, 2014

Welcome to the beginning of the end! I was at a technology conference today, but the students carried on without me. They got to start reading "The Ransom of Red Chief", got to finish of the geography book and got to be irregular again, with verbs that is. They also got to take a look at how drugs can affect our bodies.

We are walking over to WLA tomorrow for the wind ensemble presentation by MLC. Should be pretty cool. Please make sure your student is dressed appropriately for taking a walk.

Good Tuesday to you. Our big ticket item for today was going through the math test that we took yesterday. We had a range of grade from some A's to some not A's  lets call them. So, I kept track of how many students got each problem wrong and we went through each of those in class together. We seem to keep making the same kind of small mistakes that add up. Old habits die hard I suppose, but we will keep working on them as long as we can!

Well, well, well. So you are back again. Not too much to report. We worked on the play today in groups so we had some of the students out of the room most of the day. We worked on our projects and got those done (or so I am told). I did not see students taking advantage of the extra credit or working on AR. Remember that is due no later than Thursday 8:00 am. We got through a few more chapters of out literature novel and we also checked out invasive, poisonous toads in Australia, the Coral reef, and what it is like to try and work in Antarctica. We ended the day trying to talk about appositives, but it was hard to focus on that after our day of play rehearsal.

We will be looking at some of the information that evolutionists rely on and talking about some of the issues that we have with this. Our math test on Thursday didn't go as well as hoped, so in addition to providing the answers on the tests and making the question sheets available, we are doing form B of the test as a take home assignment. We also went through some of the most common errors that I am seeing.

Happy Wednesday! Remember there is 3:30 church tomorrow. Friday there is school until 12:00 and there is church at 1:00. We are not having any lunch at school so please make appropriate arrangements for your child.

Tomorrow is our trip to the planetarium. We will leave after a devotion and plan to be back by 1:00 in time for our math test. All of the students agreed that this was a great idea. ;-) The question was raised if the students need to dress up for the trip. They are certainly welcome to, especially if they are attending 3:30 church. Otherwise, as long as they follow the school dress code (no extra holes or worn looking clothes) they should be fine.

I found a video of our lesson today at Lesson 95 feel free to watch it again if you need some help. The same teacher has videos on the next 5 lessons as well.

Wednesday we will take a look at the history and culture of the region. Well, a very brief overview since that is a LOT of history to cover. And we're back! We had some tired student today, but we still managed to get some things done. We finished our science section by learning that shooting stars are not stars and we also learned the difference between meteorids, meteorites, and meteors. We also did some map work to learn more about southeast asia. Those students also reviewed demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. (I used those as a demonstrative adjective in that sentence.) These are simple enough with a little practice. (I used these as a demonstrative pronoun there.) Which students learned about interrogative adjectives? Why, all of them. Which learned about interrogative pronouns? Again, all of them. We also multiplied algebraically. In other words we figured out that (-3x)(4yx)(3y) is really -36x(squared)y(squared). Most importantly we talked about how as we plan for our futures, the most important thing, the corner stone, is that we stay in Gods word and keep Christ in our lives. Our final devotion really fit in well.

Are you feeling the madness? If so, you should probably seek professional help. We took time today to talk about differences and how we can appreciate differences. We find it hard to appreciate people who are different and like different things than we do, but it is differences that help us accomplish things! We also reviewed some terms in math so that we can remember the difference between whole numbers and counting numbers and how they are different than rational numbers. We are also learning to work with demonstrative pronouns and adjectives. It seems hard but it comes down to if the word is followed by a noun it is an adjective. (This cat is cute.) If the word is followed by a verb before a noun comes along, it is a pronoun. (This is a cute cat.) Same deal for interrogative pronouns and adjectives. We also looked at the inner planets of the solar system. The outer planets come next.

Today we had a great presentation about bullying, what it is and how to deal with it. She made a great point that we all, as sinners, have some bully in us. We also talked about being a good friend and also talking appropriately. Good things for us to work on. In math we looked at using order of operations with negatives. The math is pretty easy, but it takes a lot of focus and paying attention to what you are doing to keep it all straight. For English, we are practicing what we learned yesterday about demonstrative and interrogative pronouns and adjectives.

We added a few more specifics to our growing body of knowledge about the moon. We also did some work with India. Specifically we looked at the economy and government of India. We have had several counties now that have a president and a prime minister. It is an interesting concept. Speaking of interesting concepts, we also learned how to solve percent problems using ratios. It is actually very similar to problems we have already been doing.
