Tiff on violin

Elle on violin

Brandon on violin

Samuel on violin

Good day one and all. A special thanks today to Dr. Schani, our musical guest teacher, who showed us how to play the violin and did some Christmas songs with Charlie. We also reviewed (yea, I taught ahead again) how to use scientific notation for really small numbers. (Who wants to write 0.0000000000000000000000000000734 after all?) We watched some of one of the many versions of Treasure Island as well.

Welcome one and all to the Monday edition of your favorite blog! We used our boxes today, but I am still not going to tell you why! We also re-learned how to subtract mixed measures. (I can't help myself sometimes and I teach things early.) We got to check out most of our tall tale Voice Thread projects. We had a nice service practice as well. We also got to see the end of the Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol. Some students said it was a little weird to see Macbeth playing Scrooge, but he is still Captain Picard to me!

Greetings one and all. It is Friday! Although the week is not done. Please have your student at WLA by 8:20 for our practice tomorrow. We may be done early, but please allow until 10:15 for us to be finished.

Today in math we learned how to work average problems in reverse. (You'll have to ask your student about that one.) We also finished Treasure Island and started watching A Christmas Carol staring the one and only Patrick Stewart who, as some students noticed, also stared in our movie version of Macbeth.

Thursday's school day is in the books. The power outage last night wrecked some havoc with our equipment, again, but we still got another full day of education in. We Took our science test today and we averaged a B, yea! We also looked at some story problems involving ratios. We worked diligently on our English worksheets. We also heard about an interesting negative consequence of the war in Iraq. Ask your student about the difficulties Christians have in Iraq and why, in some ways, they are worse now than they were before the war. We also crammed a lot of Russian history into a small time. We are coming along well with our Christmas service material as well. We just about finished with Treasure Island but ran out of time right at the end. We will finish it off tomorrow.

Tuesday time again. We had a bit of a topsy turvey day today as Mrs. Kemnitz needed to borrow the class for a bit. At first it was going to be three short times, but she managed to get it all in in one long time slot. What for you ask? Ah ha, I shall not tell, but your student does need a box, a shoe box or similar will do, and enough wrapping paper to cover said box. Please bring those tomorrow! Thanks.
We did manage to get our geography test in despite making time for Mrs. Kemnitz. We even managed a B average! Hurrah! I let the students read Treasure Island on their own this time. In math we discussed how to follow the proper order of operations when doing math problems. As your students about my Dear Aunt Sally.

Welcome to Friday! Come on in the classroom is warm, at least compared to the weather outside! Today we took a spelling test, wrote memory work, matched all of the countries of Europe (the bodies of water were extra credit - the class average was 102.5% YAHOO!), went through the Christmas service, took a math test, worked on voice thread, got through another chapter in Treasure Island and still had time to learn about how cold Russia is and how the sea floor actually spreads out. On top of all that, we moved desks! What a day.

Hidey Ho neighbors. My technology workshop this morning was informative and I was glad I went!

Remember we want to LEAVE at 7:30 tomorrow so everyone needs to bring a cold lunch and be here before 7:30.

7th grade serves for the Advent supper tomorrow night.

Today we took the geography test. We also started our voice thread projects for our English tall tales. We read some more of A Christmas Carol and we worked through the pretest for math.

With the field trip tomorrow please remember that memory work and spelling are still due on Thursday. Please don't forget!

Good day one and all.  Just a couple of reminders. On Wednesday we want to leave school at 7:30 so please be here before then. Everyone will also need to pack a cold lunch that we will leave on the bus during the tour and performance and then eat on the ride home. Thanks! Also, I will be gone to a technology conference tomorrow morning but will be back for the afternoon.

Today 13 out of 16 people got A's on their memory work. Keep up the good work!

Happy weekend everyone. Just a note to let you know that all of the due dates for Christmas service memory work are typed right in the service. We had a handful of students today that seemed to miss the due dates on the sheets, the note on the board, my reminder and the blog letting them know that there was memory work due today. There is another hymn due on Monday and a repeat of today's on Monday as well.

Happy Thursday! We are making good progress working on our Christmas Service. (O Little Town of Bethlehem is due tomorrow don't forget.) We also discussed Easter Europe. Many of the countries in this region didn't even exist when we were in school! We also had a review of how to change a number from a decimal or fraction into a percent. English we worked on our sheets for tomorrow and in science we had a quiz. The Ghost of Christmas Past is now through with Scrooge and we are awaiting the arrival of Present.

Happy Advent!

Happy Advent everyone. It was great to be able to worship with most of the class tonight.

Today we kept going with our discussions on erosion and Europe. In math we talked about powers of ten in preparation for dealing with scientific notation.

Don't forget recitation from the Christmas Eve service is due tomorrow.

Hello friends! I had the blog open and ready to go and then life took over and I never got it done. My apologies to my faithful readers! Yesterday we talked about dividing decimal numbers again. We also started discussing Northern Europe and how surface water affects erosion. We also started working on the Christmas Eve service. Please note that there will be Thursday, Friday and Monday memory work while we learn our parts and songs for the service. Please also note that Wednesday Advent services start tomorrow. Pastor has sent home a sheet explaining a service opportunity the students will have to host one of the meals for after the service. Additionally, we are taking a break from Treasure Island and have started a play adaptation of A Christmas Carol in preparation for our trip next week.

We had a nice quiet morning so far today. Many students were working hard to get some things done. Disappointingly, some of them were working on things that were due today. As life gets busier, it is even more important to encourage your student to stay on top of his or her assignments. (Like remembering to do a blog for example ;-)

Happy Thanksgiving! I pray for safe journeys for all! We tied up some loose ends today and talked about the different ways to present an answer to a division problem, based on what kind of a problem it is. (If the question asks how many students would go in each class, you can't say 23 and 1/4 students. There you would use the remainder, but if it asked how long each piece of rope would be, then you could use a fraction or a decimal.) We also spent time talking about how to do the bibliography cards and note cards. Then had a nice long chunk of time to work on putting that into practice.

Hello friends. To start off with I'd like to share a little personal news. Thaddeus came in at 50th percentile for height and 75th percentile for weight. We are very pleased. We are having an echo cardiogram done in December to see how the heart is doing.

Now, back to work! We discussed what to do when someone puts us down for our faith today. We also spent some time turning fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions and decimals into percents and percents into decimals. Round and round she goes where she stops nobody knows! Jim has cut the ship loose and could now be in some serious trouble. We are also going to try our hand at writing a tale tale. We also are looking at some musical terms and what they mean.

Friday is here once again, but you probably already knew that. What you may not have know though is that the pirates attacked the stockade, but the good guys won the battle. The little line that goes over repeating decimals is called a vinculum. You may also not have known that we took a science test and just missed averaging a B-. We also took our map test on one half of the countries of Europe. We also got the map for the other half. We will take that test after Thanksgiving.

Hey everybody! Rejoice with me. Yesterday I managed to bring two computers back from the dead. I don't know for how long they will stay that way, but for now I am pretty excited. Now, add to that that we all got to see Winnie the Pooh today and what more can you ask for? Current events, Meet Math, Phy Ed and a corrected science study guide with some study time and vision testing on the side? Well you got it! Plus we added some pirates on the end as well. Beat that!

I hope you have had a good Wednesday. I have had a slew of technical issues culminating in my main computer dying! I will not be very responsive by email until I can get that taken care of. Please bare with me in my time of grief. Anyhow, despite that catastrophe, we managed to do some more work with direct objects, take our geo test (we averaged a B yea!), learn about how wind erodes, and even use the distributive property of multiplication over addition. As if that wasn't enough we got Jim reunited with the other folks despite the mutiny going full blast.

Hello again. Snow is back! Well, come on, it is WI after all! Gotta love it! We looked at angles today and how to figure out a bunch of angles based on the measurement of one of them. We also started a look at European history, but as expected, this took more than one class period, so we will wrap that up tomorrow. We also corrected the geo test and the science study guide so we are ready for the science test tomorrow. We averaged a B- on the study guide which is an improvement. It was good to get back to the routine today. We started learning more about Europe and decimals. We also went through the study guide for the science test tomorrow. We started reading Treasure Island today as well. On the right hand side under links is a link to a favorite web site of mine. It is called Librivox. People take books that are in the public domain and read them out loud. They then make a recording of that available for free download. Treasure Island is one of the books that is available. If your student would like to follow along and listen to the book, or if you want to listen to it yourself, it is available for you. I would ask that any students who listen to it also read along as they do. Thanks!

On another note, our prezis went well. I have given the students their next country but we won't be doing those until some time next year. Some students are very excited and have been working on them already, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that they are not due for a long time yet.

Tomorrow is field trip day! We plan to have our morning devotion, use the rest rooms and leave. I hope to be on the road by 8:15. We will park across the street from the theater. The play should be done around noon. We then plan to get our lunches and walk to the city center to eat. Happy Friday! Today we started to paint a fall scene. We took our geo test and had 3 A+s and a pretty good over all average. We also learned about LCM. In connection to that I introduced the students to the Kahn academy. It is a web site that has a lot of free educational videos. Many of them are on math topics, including LCM. They come with no guarantees, but it is nice to be able to watch them on your time table as many times as you would like.

Wow. I forgot another one. That lets you know what the past two weeks have been like. Sorry about that!
Today we had the opportunity to spend the morning learning CPR and how to use an AED. We learned how to do it for adults, children, and infants. The entire class is now certified for CPR and using an AED. Did you know we have two AEDs in our building? There is one in the lunch room and one in the coat room. In the afternoon we talked more about minerals and practiced some of our songs for our musical.

Well we had some excitement today. Things got thrown for a loop when the power went down for some time. The class got treated to some extra Pastor Weigand time while I tried to mitigate some of the damage the power outage did to our computers. Eventually the power was restored and things got back near to normal. Now if only I could say the same about the computers . . .

Another Thursday has arrived. (Did this one take a few extra days or is that just me?) Today we worked on subtracting fractions when you have to borrow. We also looked at the climates of Latin America. There are more than you would think. We played some soccer and enjoyed an incredibly beautiful day. We discussed that 'not' is an adverb and not part of the verb phrase. We corrected the science study guide and checked out a bit more of "Macbeth".

We will have a guest speaker coming tomorrow. Watch for details.

Greetings again! It occured to me that I never did blog yesterday. I appologize. I had a quick computer audi fix to do after school which turned into a two day power supply replacement. In the process the blog was left undone. Today I am back!

Yesterday and today we started looking at our Prezi presentations on Latin America. So far they are fairly well done. We also started talking about 3 prargraph essays. We have also been talking about molucules and compunds and such. Today we reviewed how the mass number and the atomic number of an element let us decide how many protons, electrons and nuetrons their are. In math we took our test yesterday and today started talking about prime factorizations. It has been a busy week!

Hi. The first page of spelling is a bit confusing because some of the words have short vowel sounds and double consonants. So as a special bonus for my faithful blog readers here is some help.

17. harass
18. appendix
19. confess
20. vanilla

Aren't you glad you checked the blog tonight? Don't forget it can be emailed to you every night between 5 and 7. Look at the bottom of the page and you can have this delivered. And unlike a pizza, you don't even have to tip!
Today we finished Terra Nova testing! We also went though half of the pre-test in class. The students will have the next half due for Friday since we will have our trip tomorrow. Please remember that we are walking, possibly in rain, so help your student be prepared for the weather. We also had our map test today. Some of the students took the extra testing time to study their maps. Good for them! We also took a look at some irregular verb forms. Lots to remember there.

It got our day off to a great start, but we did have to do some creative schedule rearranging the rest of the day! We got our geography test taken after a little rescheduling. Grandparents day is next week! We will be working on our project for it tomorrow. We really need those pictures of grandparents (with the grandchild if possible.) 7th grade is also responsible for the plates and napkins for the meal as well. We need enough for about 175 grandparents! How cool is that? If you would also like to bring some sloppy joes, please talk to Mrs. Lauber or Mrs. Albrecht.

It took me a few hours but I did figure out the technical glitch with our geography test that we took yesterday. As usual, it was user error. Happy First Day of School! Enough planning already, let's do some learning!

We had a great opening devotion by Mr. Zunker today reminding us that when we hurt each other, we hurt Jesus. We pray that we serve each other in love this year and always.

We took a look at our first math lesson of the year which was mostly review. We looked at why people live where they do. We got rained out for soccer so we did some basketball instead. We also learned some jingles and learned about landforms. We ended the day discussion why we are going to study Shakespeare and started listening to The Outsiders.

HAPPY LAST DAY OF SCHOOL (for the kids). Keep them reading over the summer and we will see you next year.

I'll be having meetings and working on next year until we take Thaddeus in for surgery. That is still on for the 6th and 7th. The average recovery time is 7 to 10 days. Keep up the prayers! Thanks!

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Happy last full day of school! We watched the Hobbit movie today. Not quite the best version, but since it is the only version so far . . . We also learned about how NASA fixed Hubble and talked about space stations. We finished going though our voice thread projects and also went through our fairy tales. All in all an entertainingly educational day.

Please remember to send bags along tomorrow so that students will be able to carry their stuff home.

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

We stayed dry and cool today. We had some fun, but we also learned the importance of listening to each other.

The English final copy is due tomorrow and the literature essay questions are also do. Please don't forget! Have a great night.

Good news update!  Wautoma is predicting 65 and partly sunny for Tuesday! (So far at least.)

Friday, May 20, 2011

We have had some blog problems this week, the problem being I got so busy after school I forgot to do it! So sorry! (On the plus side I did get the computer virus removed.) Anyhow, so ends the last complete week of school. We got to watch the lower grades play entitled "I Need a Vacation!" That got our minds thinking about summer, that and the beautiful weather. Speaking of weather, I will keep an eye on the weather forecast for Wautoma, but as of right now they are predicting a slight chance of rain and a high of 57. Last year it was in the 90s. We shall see, but keep an eye on it so we dress appropriately.

Today we started chapter six of Romans. We also finished up our geography projects. Those that were done already worked on building a model of a lunar lander. We are starting our fairy tales for English but reviewing for math.

Spelling: nothing, we are all done!
Lit: read in class, we will finish the book on Monday and have our essays due for Wednesday.

Happy Wednesday! Today we took some more verses in Romans. We had a bit of a technical difficulty, but we were able to try out some different technology which worked out well indeed. We also did some review in math and English, kept hammering away on our projects for geography and got Smaug killed in The Hobbit.

Well, we had some technological difficulties today, but we eventually got our science test taken. We also did a math test, worked on our geo projects and did some more work on words that are often mixed up. The principal reason our principal is here is to uphold our principle of Christian education.

Anyhow . . .

Wow its a warm one out there! I am sending home the paper work for our field trip today. (It got handed out during Youth Praise, so some of you may not get it until tomorrow.) There is your standard information sheet, but there is also a registration form from Camp Phillip. I need both back, with the $15 as soon as you can work it. Thanks!

Today we started our project for geography. We also reviewed for our science test for next week. We did some math and English work, and talked more about the book of Romans. We also watched the Road to Emmaus video. Ask your child about it. I think it is very well done.

Hey, it's Tuesday! Today we saved the crew of Apollo 11, took a math pretest, reviewed for the geography test, tired to figure out if the dependant clause was an adj or an adv, and we got the dwarfs out of the barrels and they are all alive, for now!

Two weeks from today  we will take our trip to Camp Philip! There will be a sheet coming home soon, but the entire trip will be accomplished within the confines of a regular school day. The cost will be $15 thanks to some help from the school to cover the cost of the bus.

Track meet tomorrow, weather permitting. Dress appropriately.

Thanks PSF for the lunch! I had a toasted club sandwich and the Backyard grill and it was good! Thank you also to those who gave gifts. It is especially nice at this time of year, when the students would rather be outside then trying to learn, to get a little pat on the back to let us know our long hours are appreciated. The thing is, we appreciate your long hours with your children, too!

Welcome to Tuesday! Today we landed on the moon! Well, we watched some guys land on the moon while Micheal Collins orbited the moon so they would have some place to go back to. We also learned how the metric system connects mass, area, and volume in a very logical and easy way. We reviewed for our geography test and expanded our knowledge of subordinate clauses.

Happy Weekend! Today we tried out a new art site and gave our reviews. They were room temperature. However, we did find some connected resources that were neat. We also added how to find the volume of pyramids, cones, and spheres to our bank of knowledge. We took our map test for geography and started our next chapter. We are nearing the end! Of the world? No, the book.

The end of the week has arrived. Enjoy the hopefully warm weather this weekend.

Today we finished up our Galatians lesson. One more to go. We also looked at an easy way to deal with lots of negatives in a long string of multiplication. We also discussed gerunds. Now we have to be able to figure out if the verbal is a participle or a gerund. Next comes infinitives! We took our geography test today. That went well for the most part. We also started working on musical definitions. We finished the day working on some multi-frame pictures.

Hello again my friends. Nice to have you here, those failthful few who are still with me.  Today was not so action packed as some, but we still got some things acocmplished. We finished chapter 5 of Galatians, looked at simplifying equations, yes again, but they are longer now, and we are still going with participles and polution. We reviewed for our geography test and did some vocab work in preperation for our lit test. We also went across the world to check in on Libya and Japan. Things do not look good.

Welcome to another day of grace from the Lord. Today we finished lesson 9 from Galatians. We continue to hear about the blessings of the Gospel. We also his lesson 100 in Math! Hurray! We discussed estimating square roots that don't come out to be nice regular numbers like 4. We also talked about those pesky irrational numbers. In geography we took our test and that went fairly well. In English we talked about piranha. Then we went back to the prepositional phrases again. We followed that up with a discussion of garbage, but that was for science class so that was ok. That left us just enough time to correct literature but not discuss it unfortunately.

Tomorrow is WLA play day! Please remember you will need to make arrangements to get get your student home from WLA.

Today I was very excited to teach the students about Pythagorean Theorem. So excited that I was most of the way through the lesson before I realized that that is the lesson for tomorrow and not today. On the bright side, tomorrow's lesson should be pretty short! We finished Pride and Prejudice today so the students should be ready for our trip on Friday. Please remember that you will need to make arrangements to get your student from WLA. I have only gotten about 1/2 of the slips back making sure you are aware of that. We also took or science test. That went fairly well.

We will re-write the song for church tomorrow. Most everyone did quite well, but I want to make sure we really have it down. I am hoping that will help increase our confidence and thereby our VOLUME!

Hello again. We are trying something different in the calssroom. The assignments will no longer be posted on the baord. I am finding that too many students are suing this as a crutch to aavoid paying attention when the assingment is given. Then, if the person writing the assignemnts on the board misses something, these students are blaming the student writting the assingments instead of realizing that he or she should have been listening when the assignemnt was given. For now I plan to keep doing the blog, but please understand this is intended to be an aid for you to check on your student and to be involved in what is going on. This is not intended to allow your student to not pay attention when the assignment is given knowing that he or she can simply check the blog latter. Thanks.

This said, many students were doing just fine on their own and I don't think the assingment board was useful to them, so it should not be detrimental to them to have it gone.

Today we continued to discuss Galatians. We talked about how when we trust in God's grace to save us, we can't help but love others the way he loved us. In math we learned how to indirectly measure angles by using simialr triangles. We corrected our Geography study guides but the test won't be for some time yet. In English we discussed how prepositional phrases are more than just pretty phrases, they actually serve as adjectives and adverbs. Tomorrow we will have two worksheets to practice. The science test will be tomorrow. We are fairly far into Treasure Island. Today we listend to one chapter via audio book and assigned one. The second part of the battle is about to begin.
