I pray you had a blessed Christmas with safe travels for all. Thank you all for the generous gifts. They are appreciated.

Just a reminder that the quarter ends one week after we come back to school. I hope to get all of the incomplete work when we come back on Monday, and also keep going on the AR books, time is almost up!

Happy New Year!

CHRIST IS BORN! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD BLESS! SEE YOU tomorrow and NEXT YEAR!

Today we talked about using scientific notation for very small numbers today. We also went through the service one last time. Then Mrs. Pankratz came to help us with a very special art project. THANKS MRS. PANKRATZ!

Please remember to have your student dress up for our service tomorrow.

Today we looked at subtracting mixed units. As long as you remember to borrow the correct units, it is't too hard. We also looked at dependant clasues that are introduced by words other than subortination conjunctions. Don't worry, we did the assignment in class. We also looked at how we measure the magnitude of earthquakes and some of the ways they can affect people. Ask your child what to do if the water on the shore of the ocean suddenly goes away.

Please remind your student to dress up for our service on Wednesday. We want to look our best to glorify God.

See you tomorrow at WLA, I have been assured that the kids will know their lines and speak with enthusiasm tomorrow. Help them review if you have time.

We did some work with averages in math today, and in English we worked on independent and dependant clauses. Because some clauses can not stand on their own, they have to be connected to another clause that can stand alone. Because if we didn't. (See how that makes no sense by itself?)

For Science we did a Jeopardy style review.

The students today were very excited to see each other. Unfortuantly, they were not as enthusiastic about following the rules and using their time wisely. We are going to work on it. We talked about how to do math operations in the correct order. We even learned to Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. In English we continued to work on verbals since learning how to use verbals can be a challenging task. In literature we started a new story about a girl from Earth who is now living on Venus.

There have been a few questions regarding Christmas gift exchange this year so I thought I'd better re-explain directly to you. We will not be exchanging names. Each girl will bring a gift for a girl and each boy will bring a gift for a boy. I will then number then and the students will draw numbers and that will be the gift they get, as long as it isn't their own. We are still looking for gifts of around $5, same as in past years.
Today we talked about the music we listen to. We then sang some music while we practiced for the Christmas service. We are doing well, but relying on the sheets to much. Please run through the words for the service and song with your students if you are able to help them commit everything to memory. We did some scientific notation today in math and took a science test. We also are reading "The Ransom of Red Chief".

Busy day today. We started off the day with the flu vaccine. We had time for a very short Christ Light lesson. For English we got the assignment from yesterday's lesson. This combined with a quick math lesson gave us a very long study period. Good thing too, since there was a lot to do in English. We seem to still be working on spacing out longer assignments since many students were working on the artist worksheets that are due tomorrow. There is nothing wrong with that except that it cuts into the time I had intended for them to get English done.

The play today was excellent. We had a good time and brought back the same number of students that we left with.

Advent services begin tomorrow. Please be aware that after school before church, my children and I are trying to get work done before the service. If any of the 7th graders want to stay in the room and work until church, I am happy to allow them to. However, if they are not going to be working quietly, please make other arrangements for them.

Monday, November 30, 2009

Today we are reviewing chapters 8 and 9 in science. Erosion! We also looked at sales tax, unit price, and tips. We are reviewing participles one more time before we get into gerunds on Wednesday.

Mid-terms should have one home today, please sign and return. If you want to keep it, feel free to send a note or just cut off the bottom. Thanks!

Our math lesson was very short which left lots of room for study time. Our English lesson was part two, so that left lots of room for study time. Since we did pretty well with those study times, we did a fun review of Vivaldi and Van Gogh. After lunch they students were given a study guide for science for the test tomorrow. The study guide this time, is in fact the test with the questions and answer choices in a different order. The test scores were very poor last time. Hopefully the students will use their study guides to get those scores up. In lit. the students were on their own for the next chapters this time.

We also tried to draw on the right side of our brains by copying a Picasso drawing, but doing it upside down! We also worked with repeating decimals. We also got Stanley and Zero out in the dessert with no water or food. What will they do? On top of all that, can you believe it, we started on the Christmas service. Today Zero ran away from camp, but he will be ok, really he will. We learned about waves, currents and tides. We also looked at the distributive property. 3(2+4) = 3 x 2 + 3 x 4
We also studied El Nino and what that might mean for our weather this winter.

The science tests were handed back today. The test grades were quite poor. It seems that some of the students did not use the study guide, as they were unable to put down anything for the short answer section. When we finish this chapter, we will go back and review both chapters together.

Hello again. The ants were marching one by one today, figuratively. We also talked about glaciers and a LOT of vocab words were involved. Passive verbs were also talked about by us. (I put that sentence in the passive form, as opposed to the active we talked about passive verbs.) We also practiced finding the area of triangles. (1/2 base times height) On top of all that, we got Stanley to find something interesting but he had to give it to X-Ray.

Tomorrow is the 8th grade play at 1:30 (or Thursday night.) We look forward to that.

Friday we are going to the WLA play. Since the school will be covering the cost of the bus to get there, you don't need to send any money.

Over the weekend I was able to add two more technological tools into your child's arsenal. First of all I have registered with a site called spellingcity (there is a link on the side of this page). This site allows me to enter the spelling lists from our book for each unit. The students are then able to go to that site and search for our lists by teacher. The site will then teach the student how the word is pronounced, spelled, and use the word in a sentence. The site will also create many different kinds of spelling games using our specific list. It looks like this could be a neat tool.

I also was able to get the code for the on-line science book. This allows the students to access an on-line version of their text book. (Mrs. Neubauer has already given them the code for the Geography book.) There is a link on the side of this page for that as well. Your student was given the code today. It is also on the link on the side.

I learned about some interesting tools at conference last week as well. I will look to try out some of those as time allows. I will keep you updated.

Today we took our science test. Since we didn't have as much time to reveiw as I wanted yesterday, I allowed the students to take the test with an assigned partner. Some groups did very well, and the class averaged a C. We also took the math pretest with partners today, and that went very well, so we should be good to go for the real thing tomorrow. Please remind your student to take his time and avoid simple mistakes. The daily work seems to be filled with simple addition mistakes and the like.

You should have received a note letting you know when your student - parent - teacher conference time is. If you haven't please ask your student for it. As you can see, it is a very tight schedule, so we will need to keep the conferences to 15 minuets. If we need more time to discuss anything, an additional meeting can be arranged.

Monday, October 12, 2009

Today we went through the study guide for the science test. We also worked through a math pre-test. Some of the class practiced for the play while the rest of the class got some lab time to work on their English paper. In Christ light we finished our discussion on abortion. In literature we got to see Scrooge's Christmas present.

Behavior today was much better. Unfortunately, it was very much a law based change. I pray that the behavior can stay improved but that the motivation will move to a gospel motivation. In other words, I hope we will behave because we want to and because it is the right thing to do instead of because we are afraid of punishment.

The students got their geography maps back today. It seems that the results were mixed. Some students did a great job and knew where most things were, while some, unfortunately, did not put in the same effort. Let's all use our God given talents to the best of our ability!

Today we talked about renewable and non-renewable resources. We discussed the pros and cons of each. We also heared a little of The Christmas Carol but Scrooge is still a miser, so far. We also heard more about the war in Afghanistan and the earth quakes that happened last night. On top of all that we learned that NASA has discovered a new, huge ring around Saturn.

I am very sad to report that today we hit a new low for behavior, including disturbing several other classes. We also continued to miss vital information because we were not listening during class. The saddest part was that the behavior continued through out the day and failed to improve despite repeated discussions and consequences. Good thing the Lord forgives these sins of disrespect and selfishness.

Today we suffered from testing backlash. Now that the tests are done, the behavior deteriorated unfortunately. We did have a chance to look over the last research papers and review what can be done better. Students should look in their books back at unit 17 for help with the papers. Clearly, some are not doing some. However, there were some very good papers as well. Keep up the good work. The next paper is using three sources and everything will be due next Wednesday.

We also finished our section on rocks. We will do some review tomorrow and will take the test next week.

We also finished our Christ Light book on how we can get along better with other people. Today we discussed how to respond to people who think creation is foolish, and I got a lot of blank stares. This would be a good discussion to continue at home.

We started learning about Schubert today in music. We also went through our spelling assignment from Monday. Almost all of the class failed, so after going through all of the answers in class, I reassigned it for tomorrow. It was a tough one. We also went through the two English sheets that are due tomorrow to make sure everyone knows what to do. Since there was only one question, I look forward to lots of A's.

Today we learned more about Beethoven and had lots of fun practicing songs for the play. We also finished our faces. They turned out fairly well, except several students were not listening when the directions were given and drew the wrong person, but they still got good practice drawing a face. While behavior wasn't perfect, there clearly was some effort made by most of the students so that was pleasing to see. Now, if we could behave that well because we want to and not out of fear of punishment, we will be in great shape!

Welcome!
We lost a little ground int he behavior department today. We are going to have to work hard to get back in line tomorrow. (Friday's are always harder.) We did write the words for our song this week and we got to practice with our groups in church again. In English we are doing the final steps of our current research paper. (Next is three sources, after that the students have to research on their own.) Lisenka is getting sent back to Russia because of a prejudice doctor. We also found out that igneous rocks can be intrusive or extrusive.

We also looked at indefinite pronouns and how they are often misused. (Everyone should take out his or her book. Not everyone should take out their book.)

This past week we have also spent some time talking about loving each other and how we treat each other. Take a moment to talk to your child about how he or she treats his or her classmates. Are we always treating each other with Christian love?

Anyhow . . .

With the English assignment being to work on their reports, we got a very long study time today. I am pleased to report that the students handled it very well. Some of them even did some work! We also took a science test on minerals. We went through all the questions and answers yesterday so I am anxious to see how we did. This also resulted in some study time so your student should have an excelent start on his/her homework for the night or even the week! We also got Lisenka to Elis island, but there was a hitch there. We also managed to listen to some Beethoven, our current composer, during study time. I wonder if his music is so powerfull because he was trying to crank up the volume so he could actually hear it.

Look for mid-terms tomorrow. Please make sure they get signed and returned ASAP. Some parents like to keep the mid-term. If that is the case, then just write and sign a note for me letting me know that you saw it. Thanks!

We had a great afternoon with fun and fitness, it was beautiful weather and a good time was had. Unfortunatly, the excitment of the waiting for the afternoon made it a rough morrning. Self control was a scarce commodity.

We went though all of the science test answers. The class averaged a D- ( we did have a few students who did very well also) so I curved the grades a bit by giving the students some free points to help make up for the chart at the end of the test. This raised the average to a D+. I also gave them a double sided worksheet with the same chart and a similar one to help raise the grades and get the idea across.

We had a misunderstanding about English yesterday that resulted in some late nights for some families. I appoligize for that and want to thank the parents that let me know. The outline for English last night was supposed to be a main idea list and be very basic. It should only have taken a few min. We went though the entire assignment in great detail today, and I have reassigned it for tomorrow. The science tests are corrected. They did not go as well as I had wanted. The class averaged a C- thanks to a few excellent tests. For the most part, considering we went through every question and answer on Thursday, and I sent home a study guide, I was hoping for a stronger showing than that. This was one of the easier tests for the year, so please encourage your student to really study for the test. They are allowed to take notes as we go though the questions and answers on our review day. In addition there is almost always a study guide as well.

Thank you to those four students who did score in the A category.

A quick note about literature. I am asking the students to write their answers in complete sentences. Starting next week I will be marking answers wrong if the sentences are not complete. Many of the students are using fragments, but of more concern is the number of students who are not even using punctuation. Please remind your student to punctuate. If I had been marking them wrong this week, many of the students would have gotten much worse grades. Let's not let that happen.

Thanks

P.S. GO PACK!

Today we worked on reviewing science from this year and worked on commonly confused words one more time. We also looked at events in the world and above it. (The shuttle finally landed, a new supreme court judge? and wars and rumors of war.)

Happy Assension! Our Lord used his last words to tell us to spread His word so let's not be afraid!

Today we took some time to do a collage. The results are sure to be . . . interesting!
Memory and spelling went home today. We averaged a C and a C- respectively. I also sent home a progress report. For my classes this gives you an idea of what to expect on the final report card. Literature does not yet included the AR points, so those have the best chance of changing. For most of the students, if they are still missing any work, I entered a 0% for that grade. If a student hands in any of that missing work, the grade will be docked for being late, but it will improve over the 0%. The grades from the other teachers are still the midterm grades.

There are no new assignments from today. There are a few things due next week from yesterday.

Today we heard the oral reports for English, unfortunately many of the students did not understand what they were talking about. However, with a lot of help from me, we got through it! We also had some trouble during science this morning, but the students did pull it together nicely in the end. Please help your student stay on top of his or her assignments. With the end of the year fast approaching any missing work will be a 0% or the student may have to come in over summer! Any late work will have the grade significantly reduced.

Memory work and spelling are due tomorrow. Please encourage your student to study. Last weeks were much better and I'd like us to finish strong! Also get those AR points in sooner rather than later. The students were given the due date of the 22.

Today we got to look at the pictures/videos that I took on the trip. We also talked more about God's gift of sex. We also studied elements of literature, using some specific stories as examples. Unfortunately the students did not do the assignment board so I do not know what assignments they have for the classes I do not teach.

The science projects are done! The students had to make Power Points on an assigned planet or other space body. They had to have text and pictures, and as a special twist, they had to record their narration. This created some special issues and I think the students learned a lot about their topic and Power Point. I am posting links to their projects on the right, (the rest will be their soon). Unfortunately, the audio does not seem to work after I publish them to the Internet, so you will have to read them! Enjoy!
JEANS AND SHOES TOMORROW! Any music players will be taken at the students own risk. Please make sure any and all music taken along is appropriate.

All work will be due on Monday or later.

Today we just about finished up our science projects. We had a few laughs, but also learned a few things as well.
The memory grades seem to be slipping quite a bit despite me dividing up the memory and their being none from Pastor any more. Please talk to your student about the seriousness of doing their best to learn God's word.

I'd like to thank all of you who generously gave gifts for teacher appreciation week. Thank you! We finished Where the Red Fern Grows 2 today. It was not as good as the original in my opinion. Choir did a great job (from what I hear) and the non-choir students did some good service work around school.
